Past perfect tense adalah suatu jenis tenses yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian/peristiwa yang telah selesai dilakukan pada masa lampau (benar-benar sudah dilakukan dengan sempurna). Past perfect tense juga digunakan untuk menyatakan dua kejadian yang telah terjadi dimasa lalu sebelum kejadian lainnya terjadi.

Kalimat positif:
S + Had + Verb 3 + O
- My sister had bought some vegetables from the supermarket (Kakakku telah membeli beberapa sayuran dari supermarket)
- I had finished the test (Aku sudah menyelesaikan tesnya)
- Jamal had come late to the school (Jamal telah datang terlambat ke sekolah)
Kalimat negatif:
S + Had + Not + Verb 3 + O
- My sister hadn’t bought some vegetables from the supermarket (Kakakku belum membeli beberapa sayuran dari supermarket)
- I hadn’t finished the test (Aku belum menyelesaikan tesnya)
- Jamal hadn’t come late to the school (Jamal belum datang terlambat ke sekolah)
Kalimat introgatif:
Had + S + Verb 3 + O
- Had my sister bought some vegetables from the supermarket? (Apakah kakakku sudah membeli beberapa sayuran dari supermarket?)
- Had I finished the test? (Apakah aku telah menyelesaikan tesnya)
- Had Jamal come late to the school? (Apakah Jamal sudah datang terlambat ke sekolah?)
– Menyatakan dua kejadian yang telah dilakukan sebelum kejadian yang lain terjadi.
- Amel had studied in the library before he came to the class (Amel telah belajar di perpustakaan sebelum dia datang ke kelas)
- I had practiced the songs before the program started (Saya telah berlatih lagu sebelum program dimulai)
- Last night, I had slept before my father arrived (Tadi malam, aku sudah tidur sebelum ayahku datang)
- By the time it started raining, we arrived home (Pada saat hujan mulai turun, kami tiba di rumah)
- Pandu had finished his work when I met him (Pandu telah menyelesaikan pekerjaannya ketika saya bertemu dengannya)
– Menyatakan kalimat conditional sentence type 3.
- If I had found her her address, I would have sent her an invitation
- If I had got a gold medal, I would have been happy
- If it had rained last weekend, we would have stayed at home
– Menyatakan kalimat reported speech.
- “Zizi arrived on Sunday”, she said.
She said that Zizi had arrived on Sunday - “My friend gave me some novels”, he said.
He said that his friend had given him some novels
